These are the Golden Globe 2016 nominees from Netflix, Hulu and Amazon
The Globe nominations conclude the first wave of selections for “awards season”, which included Wednesday’s SAG Awards nominations, Monday’s Grammy nominations and releases of critics’ and organizations’ best-of lists. A four-time Oscar nominee (and one-time Globe winner), DiCaprio is gunning for his first Academy Award. However, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association somehow liked it enough to nominate Ruffalo in this film, perhaps to make up not finding room in the best supporting actor category for his performance in “Spotlight“.
Streaming services have proven they can stand up strong against traditional broadcasters when it comes to original programming, with Netflix taking the top spot for the most nominations for the 2016 Golden Globes, which were announced this morning. Golden Globes bosses mistakenly announced she was reading the nominations out live from the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles via Twitter, but it was actually Ugly Betty star America Ferrera on stage. But of course, it’s always more fun to focus on the snubs.
That also means that the Golden Globes and the Emmys are able to expand their nominees to them as TV shows and can award them the same awards they previously only gave to on-air networks, given they were the only ones in the distant past that aired original content. The other two nominees were for HBO shows Silicon Valley and Veep. Her Best Actress competition includes Brie Larson for “Room”, Saoirse Ronan for “Brooklyn”, as well as the duo from “Carol“. The 29-year-old is additionally up for a Grammy for the song she co-wrote for the documentary, Til It Happens To You.
The best actress in a TV series- comedy contenders are Rachel Bloom, Jamie Lee Curtis, Gina Rodriguez, Lilly Tomlin, Grace & Frankie, besides Louis-Dreyfus. The actresses, both in their 70’s, represent an age group whose stories are rarely told in films, and the oversight stings.
Acting categories were also ripe with digital talent.
The nominees for best motion picture musical or comedy: “The Big Short, ” “Joy, ” “Cinderella, ” “The Martian, ” “Spy, ” and “Trainwreck”.
SURPRISE: Mark Ruffalo, “Infinitely Polar Bear” This Sundance dramedy, where Ruffalo plays a father battling bipolar disorder, barely registered at the box office.
Alejandro Inarritu, best director nominee for “The Revenant”: “I can’t believe this time a year ago we were in Calgary shooting “The Revanant”, and right now I’m in London and just heard the good news!”
That said, the comedy film category is not almost as crowded as the drama one, so that’s one way to get your film nominated. The film is getting good buzz in early media screenings, and Smith is a sweet guy beloved by the press for his accessibility and good humor.
“Carol” is up for greatest drama towards Pioneer-period film “The Revenant”, psychological thriller “Room”, Catholic Church abuse probe “Spotlight” and thriller “Mad Max: Fury Road”, a shock contender in the class, which not often sees a blockbuster motion nominee.
And Spotlight was perhaps too much of an ensemble piece for the Globes. It is also the first nomination for Sarah Hay, who stars as Claire Robbins in “Flesh and Bone” and is a soloist dancer now for Semperoper Ballett in Dresden, Germany after dancing professionally in the U.S. for four years and training at the School of American Ballet and the American Ballet Theatre.
