These Dunks Look Like They Belong In A Video Game
Aaron Gordon soared over his mascot, but nobody flies higher than Zach LaVine in the slam dunk contest.
“I dedicate this dunk contest and the trophy to my late coach, Flip Saunders and the Saunders family”, LaVine wrote on his Instagram account, beneath a photograph of the trophy and a jersey that read “Flip” with the infinity symbol across the back. Despite LaVine’s big performance, he had little competition. Many fans, however, weren’t thrilled with the results because they thought Gordon’s previous dunks when he used a mascot and a hoverboard as a prop were above and beyond. Riley: LaVine deserved the trophy.
Westbrook won the award in Brooklyn past year as well.
“You know, that dunk that I got 47 out of 50, that’s a dunk I’ve been doing for a while where you bring it behind your head and through your legs”, Gordon said.
As everyone who watched the contest on TNT will tell you, this dunk was taken to another level when we got to see it via a 3D camera. I wouldn’t have been upset with some sort of tie but obviously it didn’t go down that way.
The West has won five of the last six even without longtime mainstay Bryant, who hadn’t played since 2013 because of injuries. One of Gordon’s dunks was given a 49 score when it clearly deserved a flawless 50, but Shaq hated on him and gave him a 9, ruining the score.
Zach LaVine of the Minnesota Timberwolves overcame Aaron Gordon of the Orlando Magic to retain his title as the National Basketball Association Slam Dunk champion on Saturday, after both impressed with gravity-defying displays of athleticism and imagination. “He’s the one that always believed in me and drafted me!” We had moments of excitement from dunkers like Andre Iguodala, Jason Richardson, Nate Robinson, Dwight Howard, Blake Griffin, and others, but the contests as a whole left a lot to be desired. LaVine may not have been as creative as Gordon, but his smaller stature was enough to topple his bigger counterpart. But the absence of big names could not keep this year from bringing back the thrill and excitement of the dunk contest.
He is an incredible athlete whose array of dunks over the last two years have made him the greatest dunker of all time.
LaVine of the Minnesota Timberwolves edged the Orlando Magic’s Gordon in a contest that needed two extra dunks to determine a victor. It was an amazingly sick dunk that none of us had ever seen before.
Zach LaVine’s best prop turned out to be the free-throw line, as he gave us an alley-oop, windmill, and under-the-legs dunk that all started just inside the free throw line.
Jordan’s free-throw line dunk isn’t even the first such dunk of its kind (that belongs to Julius Erving in the 1976 ABA Dunk Contest).
In his first dunk, Gordon showed his unique combination of strength and acrobatics with a 360-degree, through-the-legs dunk that shook the rim and awoke the crowd.
