This Hijab Barbie May Be the Cutest Style Star on Instagram
But now, if we’re going to start filing our internet applications for the next round of new additions to the Barbie collection, we have a suggestion: a Barbie who wears a hijab.
The announcement of making Barbie dolls of all shapes and skin tones came in the wake of the unrealistic body image issue that the earlier models conveyed. Hijarbie, the doll concept dreamed up by 24-year-old Nigerian fashion designer Haneefah Adam.
Each outfit (there are a dozen ensembles at the moment) takes Adam one to three hours to design, style, and photograph on the doll, she told Refinery29.
Each Hijarbie is posted on Adam’s Instagram account, which has gained over 8,000 followers since she joined two months ago.
Complete with a tiny hijab on her plastic head, the miniature fashionista could not be further away from the blonde doll that has brandished the room of millions of youngsters for nearly sixty years.
“I want to inspire the Muslim girl”. In schools, young Muslim-American girls are frequently bullied for wearing the hijab and often live in an environment where they feel like an outsider or are made to be ashamed of who they are.
The Hijarbie doll Instagram account features Barbie doll carrying off stylish Hijab styles and modest outfits.
“I want them to be inspired – this is about having an alternative and creating an awareness of having toys that adopts your religion and culture and in your own likeness, which at the end of the day, leads to an improvement in self-esteem”, Adam said.
She continues, “It’s important to create a sense of value in the Muslim child, especially the girl child”. She hopes that her endeavour will encourage girls to appreciate the benefits of a modest lifestyle and upbringing. “Instead of dressing up her dolls in clothes she wouldn’t wear, hijabifying it will create a sense of belonging and hopefully make a positive impact”, she said.
