‘This is a good day’: Obama touts Iran nuclear deal, prisoner release
In his first public remarks since worldwide sanctions were lifted against Iran during the weekend as part of a historic nuclear deal, Ayatollah Khamenei on January 19 also expressed “pessimism” about “expressions by some USA politicians in recent days”.
A fourth Iranian-American, Nosratollah Khosravi-Roodsari was also set free but chose not to leave Iran, local media reported.
“While it is a relief to see unjustly held Americans returned home to their families”, Priebus said, “the Clinton-Obama nuclear agreement gives Iran too much in return for too little”. “If other countries move before us, it’s not a way to help our industry”, Mr. Dion said.
“They’re civilians, and their release is a one-time gesture to Iran given the unique opportunity offered by this moment and the larger circumstances at play”, Obama said.
Speaking on the edges of a three-day retreat between Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and his ministers, Dion gave strong hints that Canada will follow the rest of the global community in dropping its own sanctions against Iran. The agreement was reached in July 2015 after negotiations between Iran and the P51 which includes China France Russia the United Kingdom the United States and Germany. “Iran’s nuclear programme has been substantially rolled back in return for the lifting of sanctions and the economic benefits that will bring”.
Six Iranian nationals and 11 companies were added to a blacklist, the U.S. Treasury Department said in a statement.
Iranian President Hassan Rouhani on Sunday described the implementation of the deal on Tehran’s nuclear program as a big victory for Iranian politics and a turning point for the country’s economic development.
“The US sanctions against Iran’s ballistic missile program… have no legal or moral legitimacy”, he said. Iran will get more than $400 million, plus $1.3 billion in interest.
Amano arrived in Teheran on Sunday as he prepares the introduction of measures giving his agency greater inspection powers in order to ensure any nuclear materials in Iran will only be used for peaceful purposes.
