This is Larry Nassar’s full statement before he was sentenced
“We greatly appreciate her integrity, her many contributions, and her willingness to continue to serve through transition”.
She added, “I am here to face you, Larry, so you can see I’ve regained my strength, that I’m no longer a victim”. You have not owned yet what you did. I’m not vulnerable. Not to you. More than 150 women came forward to read statements in court, all claiming Nassar had sexually abused them. I was taking a bath when I made a decision to splash water on the floor and bang my head as hard as I could on the tub so it looked like I slipped. In thanking the media for “their efforts to shine a light on the biggest case of sexual abuse in sports history”, she says that this is “bigger than Larry Nassar, or Steve Penny, or any of the [USA Gymnastics] board members who resigned this week”.
She urged people to believe young victims of sexual abuse no matter who they accuse.
As Larry Nassar sat in his prison overalls, just metres away from them, survivor after survivor looked him in the eye and reminded him of what he’d done to them.
Aquilina took the letter and tossed it aside in disgust.
Nassar gave a short statement Wednesday in which he turned toward the women and girls, some of whom were weeping.
Hopefully no one will forget what happened, but numerous women who spoke at Nassar’s sentencing have now been empowered to make sure no one will ever forget, and to prevent something like this from ever happening again. Rachael was the first one to testify against Nassar in the court.
The head of the U.S. Olympic Committee and numerous sexual assault survivors are now calling on all USA Gymnastics directors to resign in the wake of what’s being described as the worst sexual abuse scandal in U.S. sports history. It’s hard to put into words, but it makes me literally sick all the stress and the trauma of everything. I urge those who have supported my work to understand that I can not make it about me now. “As president, it is only natural that I am the focus of this anger”.
“Larry meticulously groomed me for the objective of exploiting me for his sexual gain”, Denhollander said in court.
“There are no words that can describe the depth and breadth of how sorry I am for what has occurred”, he said. “I know that we all share the same resolve to do whatever it takes to avert such tragedies here and elsewhere”.
