This Is The Retired General Who Is Taking Over For Reince Priebus
These tweets and memes about Trump firing Reince Priebus, whom he replaced with Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly, pretty much sum up the cutthroat nature of business as usual at the White House.
He’s said to have resigned on Thursday after a brutal attack from new communications director Anthony Scaramucci in a conversation with a reporter from the New Yorker.
Scaramucci appears to be particularly aiming for Chief of Staff Reince Priebus, who he suspects of the leaks and of “c- blocking” Scaramucci’s appointment sooner.
“I think the president wanted to go a different direction”, Mr Priebus told CNN just hours after his exit was announced. I think he was right to hit the reset button, and I think it was something that I think the White House needs. “He has served the president and the American people capably and passionately”, said Ryan. In a speech before announcing Kelly’s new job Friday in NY, the president praised him as being a “star”.
Trump’s transition team was drawn to Kelly, according to the Washington Post, in part because of his experience working with DHS agencies and overseeing military operations in Central and South America.
Trump’s decision to replace Priebus was announced just after Air Force One landed at Joint Base Andrews outside Washington Friday. One “outside adviser” to Trump told Politico in June: “Trump will literally ask anyone who will listen, ‘Do you think Reince is doing a good job?’ or ‘Do you think that I should get rid of him?'” He’s done an incredible job thus far, respected by everybody. “He is a Great American and a Great Leader”, Trump wrote in posts on Twitter.
Priebus had been the head of the Republican National Committee during Mr. Trump’s ascendancy in the GOP primaries, moving over to help with the campaign for November.
Many believe Scaramucci is shaking things up in the White House in order to tighten up the administration and stop the leaks. Trump had lost confidence in Priebus, privately questioning his competence after major legislative items failed to pass the U.S. Congress.
The president followed with tweets thanking Reince Priebus, who has served as chief of staff since Trump’s inauguration. Can he actually stop the president from, as you say, being his own chief of staff, being his own spokesman? Priebus has had a diminished profile in the White House for weeks, and the president hasn’t exactly expressed support for him. “And so he has granted walk-in privileges to a lot of people, most of whom should not have walk-in privileges to the Oval Office”.
Last week it was Sean Spicer, who quit in protest of the hiring of new communications director Anthony Scaramucci. He then went on to explain his theory that Priebus leaked information about a dinner Scaramucci was having, speaking mockingly as Priebus: “Oh, Bill Shine is coming in”. Other RNC allies brought aboard included Spicer and Kate Walsh, who became deputy White House chief of staff. Walsh is now gone, and Spicer is on his way out.
Chiefs of staff generally do not last long; the average tenure is less than two years.
Trump tweeted Friday evening that Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly would take over as chief of staff.
Kelly will take over the position. “One of our real stars”, Trump said. “General Kelly has been a star”.
