This Is What Major Flooding From The Mississippi River Looks Like
The water receded in most places late Sunday but continued to rise in a few today.
But the impact isn’t expected to rival what was seen this week in suburban St. Louis.

Authorities said they have recovered the body of another teen who also went missing in the deluge.
Twelve Illinois counties have been declared disaster areas, and Governor Bruce Rauner yesterday ordered Illinois National Guard troops into flooded areas in the southern part of the state to mitigate flood damage and help with evacuation efforts.
Missouri governor Jay Nixon said the overflow off the MS would overtake the records set by “the great flood of 1993”, which killed 50 people, broke hundreds of levees and caused thousands to flee their homes. A flood wall protects the city.
In nearby Allenville, access into the often-flooded town was cut off by high water.

The levee break mostly impacts agricultural land, but water was approaching the town of about 360 residents. There were no immediate reports of damage.
“Everybody is at battle stations”, Bob Anderson, a spokesman for the Mississippi River Commission in Vicksburg, Miss., told The Christian Science Monitor on Thursday.
The Mississippi is expected to crest at Thebes, in southern IL, at 47.5 feet (14 meters) on Sunday, more than 1.5 feet above the 1995 record, the National Weather Service (NWS) said. As of Saturday, 11 levees failed, and at least 22 people have died in the floods, the Associated Press reported. Searchers were still looking Friday for five missing people – two teenagers in IL, two men in Missouri and one man in Oklahoma.
This footage is from Chester, Illinois, a small city located south of St. Louis, near the Mississippi River. The Missouri River in eastern Missouri also was on the decline.
Arnold still has concerns because it is closest to the MS and water from the bigger river continues to back up into the Meramec at that point. He estimated that about three-quarters of the homes were damaged. Two major highways – Interstate 44 and Interstate 55 – reopened south of St. Louis, meaning commuters who return to work next week won’t have hourslong detours.
“Devastating, record flooding has affected hundreds of homes and businesses across the St. Louis region and left a trail of destruction and debris”, Nixon said.

Amtrak provides twice-daily service across Missouri.
Sheriff’s deputies went door-to door recommending people evacuate from the towns of East Cape Girardeau and McClure. Valley Park used its Facebook page to advise residents Friday that the evacuation order had been lifted, and the city of Arnold’s Facebook page urged residents to watch out for snakes in flooded homes. At the federal level, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will be requested to facilitate the collection and disposal of both debris left behind by flood water and household debris, including construction materials, carpeting, furniture, appliances, etc. Two wastewater plants were shut down – at Fenton and Valley Park – allowing raw sewage into the Meramec.
In the southwestern Missouri tourist destination of Branson, residents of about 150 duplexes and homes had to evacuate Wednesday due to flooding from a manmade lake.
