This is why Android isn’t getting Super Mario Run next week
Nintendo’s upcoming Super Mario Run on iOS will require an internet connection at all times, according to creator Shigeruo Miyamoto (via Mashable).
Super Mario Run producer Shigeru Miyamoto told Mashable that there’s no offline mode for the game. Oh no, Nintendo also chose to post a new trailer for it online, which showed off a few very interesting additions to the games… He says that the network connection is used to update game saves and sync progress across devices via a Nintendo cloud account.
“We had thought at one point that it would be nice to have the World Tour [story] mode available standalone, to be able to play without that connection”. Emulators and the odd exception notwithstanding, consumers could not play the most beloved game series in history – Super Mario Bros. – without a Nintendo device.
This isn’t only a problem for anyone hoping for a little Mario gaming on flights or any other environment when internet access just isn’t possible, but for those whose mobile plans don’t include unlimited data.
The newest “Super Mario” game isn’t coming to a Nintendo game console, but to Apple’s iPhone and iPad.
“Super Mario Run” is free to download. Fils-Aimé had to press something on the device after taking it out of the dock so that Fallon could continue the gameplay, which is different from what was seen in the hybrid console’s announcement trailer where the transition appeared to be seamless.
If you’re expecting a full-fledged Mario game, you will be disappointed. Yet as neat as that presentation of the game was, it wasn’t the only new footage of the title we saw. “This is something that we want to continue to work on as we continue to develop the game”.
Miyamoto specifically stated that Nintendo made this decision for security reasons in order to prevent the game from being pirated. “This hearkens back to the questions that we received maybe five years ago saying, ‘Nintendo, when are you going to get into mobile?’ And at the time, it was positioned as, just take all your legacy content and just put it on mobile”, he said.
It has three different modes, including World Tour, which is a classic Mario platformer with six “worlds” packed with coins, toads, stars and bosses. Super Mario Run supports English, Japanese, German, French, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, Dutch, Russian and traditional Chinese language options.
