This room perfectly shows off the ridiculousness of London rent prices
Graduate Alex Lomax is looking for somewhere to live in the capital and was shocked when she arrived at an address in Clapham, south-west London.
As well as a bed, the room appears to come with a selection of winter coats, a crate and a few Daz washing powder.
An angered would-be tenant took to Twitter to show pictures she took when he went to look around a flat.
A cramped understairs cupboard has been put up for rent in London for £500 a month – plus a share of the bills. “F you London! #nothanks #privetdrive!?”
The advert reads: ‘We are looking for a friendly, open-minded and outgoing person to join our houseshare in a great period house in Clapham.
Bills are not included, and typically cost £60 (A$130) per month, according to the advert on www.london2let.com, which does not feature any photos.
“He showed me the room pretty much straight away, so I didn’t get to see much of the house itself”.
The listing concludes: “Room comes with a bed”. “I left as quickly as I could and said it wasn’t right for me”.
‘I was warned it was expensive, so ready to pay a lot for even a share, but this is clearly ridiculous’.
Lomax’s post on Twitter, comparing the room to Harry Potter’s infamous dwelling while living with his cruel aunt and uncle in Privet Drive, has been retweeted more 2,400 times so far.
“ACTUAL bed under the stairs like Harry Potter – for £500 pm!?”
Another posted: “I thought my rent in Hackney was getting a bit steep, but asking £500 for this is just offensive”.
The Standard has approached the landlord for comment.
