This Texas delegate is furious with Ted Cruz
Addressing donors at a lunch meeting on the sidelines of the convention here in Cleveland, Trump said that he, Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus and campaign chairman Paul Manafort knew what they were doing when they let Cruz speak. Ted Cruz took the stage and refused to endorse her father.
Cox said when other delegations turned on Cruz, “it felt like a WWE wrestling match when the hero turns out to be the villain at the end”. “That ain’t gonna happen”.
“That pledge is not a blanket commitment [that] if you go slander and attack Heidi I am nonetheless going to come like a servile puppy dog and say thank you very much for maligning my wife and maligning my father”.
Cruz tried to laugh off the awkward moment saying jokingly, “I appreciate the enthusiasm of the NY delegates”.
The GOP is not a social club, he added.
“The last thing we need is somebody running for president who talks trash about America”, Clinton said of the Republican nominee’s lengthy address in Cleveland.
Cruz’s actions drew condemnation from Republicans, who questioned whether the senator had torpedoed his political future. “Than all of the people who voted in the elections?” he said.
Asked by delegate whether Cruz will vote for Trump, a supporter of his interrupted and said “his vote is private”.
Cruz said he will be “watching and listening” but won’t “sit down, shut up, support the team”.
“You know, he’s a man known for a large personality, a colorful style and lots of charisma…so I guess he was just looking for some balance on the ticket”, he joked.
And another Texas conservative loudly added: “The party has spoken” to which Cruz replied “Sir I’m not going to engage in a screaming match”.
“I am not going to call him Lyin’ Ted anymore, but he did sign the pledge and it was pretty definitive”.
“I took a beating and I never backed down”, he said.
The Texas senator offered no support for Trump in a primetime address Wednesday, causing an angry reaction from delegates inside the hall – and even from some of his own constituents at a Texas delegation breakfast the following morning.
“Somebody got booed the hell out of a place by thousands and thousands of people”, Trump said not-so-cryptically of Cruz. Unity? There wasn’t one person in the room, including the Texas delegation, right? “She came to see me because she hated to see the conflict, and she made a mistake”, Donald Trump told ABC News’ George Stephanopoulos in an interview Wednesday.
Coats stinging rebuke follows Cruz’s prime-time convention speech last night.
