Thomas Tuchel: ‘Marco Reus could face Bayer Leverkusen’
With Dortmund hosting Bayer Leverkusen on Sunday, Pep Guardiola’s Bayern took their chance to go top with their fifth win from five games and leave Darmstadt hunting a first win over the Bavarian giants after seven attempts.
The result means that Dortmund retake the lead in the standings thanks to their better goal difference than Bayern, while Leverkusen drop to thirteenth.
On the first goal, Leverkusen keeper Bernd Leno did a bad job of calculating a ball that was thrown in to the box by Shinji Kagawa and hopped over it leaving himself exposed for Jonas Hofmann to simply slot it into the empty net.
With 17 minutes left Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang completed the scoring with his third successful penalty in two league games after Matthias Ginter had been fouled by Wendell, who was booked.
Leverkusen should have been awarded a penalty when Mexico striker Javier Hernandez was pushed in the area by Dortmund left-back Marcel Schmelzer on 53 minutes but referee Deniz Aytekin waved on play.
Wolfsburg, now in third place, four points behind the pair on 11, may have been weakened by the departure of playmaker Kevin De Bruyne and striker Ivan Perisic but they have beaten Bayern 4-1 last season as well as in this season’s German Super Cup.
“We have started the season very well”, he said ahead of the game.
Elsewhere, first-half goals from Alexander Esswein and Paul Verhaegh three minutes later were enough for Augsburg to defeat visiting Hannover 2-0; and Leroy Sane’s second-half strike was enough for Schalke to win 1-0 at Stuttgart to climb into fourth. Martial became the most expensive teenager ever in a deal that raised eyebrows on deadline day, but now has three goals in two league games.
Hecking, Dost and sports director Klaus Allofs had clear-the-air talks on Sunday, with the coach then quoted as saying: “Perhaps it was a mistake to make this thing public”.
But Dost was later slammed by his coach Dieter Hecking for behaving “like someone had taken his toys away” in training having been subbed off in Wolfsburg’s Champions League win at home to CSKA Moscow last Tuesday. He was eventually replaced by Adrian Ramos with ten minutes remaining. Bayern won 3-0 at promoted Darmstadt on Saturday.
