Thompson wins olympic gold for jamaica in women s 100m
After she and her sister were sent to foster care as toddlers, their grandmother won custody and raised them.
Thompson’s 10.71 was only.01 off the time she ran at Jamaica’s national championships last month.
Compatriot Fraser-Pryce, 29, who was attempting to become the first woman to win three successive golds in the event, finished third in 10.86.
“I’m kind of different because I wasn’t like a star in high school”, said Thompson, a former high-school troublemaker who hails from Banana Ground, in Manchester Parish, 50 miles west of Kingston. The U.S. has not won the event since Gail Devers’ victory in 1996. “When I place that medal in her hands, I’ll be crying”, Henderson, 27, said.
“Oh yeah, she’s watching – and she’s probably crying right now”, Bowie said with a smile. Sometimes, she feels her inexperience shows. “I always looked up to her”.
Thompson and Bowie have much in common, too. Francis did most of the talking.
Thompson and Fraser-Pryce share a coach and a close friendship.
She was clearly healed once she got to Brazil.
What happened Saturday night deserves better.
Surgery is “very possible” after the Olympics, Fraser-Pryce said, according to the Jamaica Gleaner, though she laughed off a question seeking confirmation and further details after the press conference. New Zealand’s Mahe Drysdale and Croatia’s Damir Martin crossed the finish line in the men’s single sculls side by side, not knowing which one of them was the new Olympic champion. “I have to make a big decision about what I’m going to do”. She also clinched silver and gold in the 200-metre and four x 100-metre relay at the World Championships in 2015.
“Because I knew how hard I worked, I knew the pain, I knew the sacrifice, I knew the tears, I knew everything”. This year, it is all yellow-and-green, the colors of her island nation.
She’s also so deeply respected that the entire Jamaican Olympic team voted to have her carry the flag last weekend in Rio’s Opening Ceremony.
“I cried because [the pain] was unbearable”, Fraser-Pryce said. “But I knew I had just one race to go tonight”. I was just excited to defend my title, and then the unexpected happened. And I would never want to take someone’s shine. “But to be able to stand on the podium with Elaine is a wonderful feeling”.
The bronze medal was Fraser-Pryce’s lowest 100-meter finish in three Olympics.
“When I fell down I thought, ‘Well, my dream is over, ‘ but I made a decision to dig deep because I promised my daughter I’d get her a medal”, Farah said of stepdaughter Rihanna. I am really happy for her.
“One other thing I am happy about is that Elaine got the opportunity to cross the line and get a gold medal”, Fraser-Pryce added.
“I’m not giving up on getting gold”, Bowie said.
