Thor: Ragnarok scribe to pen Sony’s Masters of the Universe reboot
The writer of the as-of-yet unreleased Thor: Ragnarok is taking a crack at the He-Man script. It’s that Marvel experience that helped land him a screenwriting job on Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Thor: The Dark World.
According to a report by Variety, Sony Pictures has tapped Thor 3: Ragnarok writer Christopher Yost to rewrite the script for their He-Man live action reboot.
Yost seems like the ideal fit given his work in the similarly fantastical realm of Asgard, and it’s not unusual for Sony to go through so many writers on a potential blockbuster like this, especially since they’ll really need to get this one right. The barbaric He-Man is the alter-ego of Prince Adam, who wanders the planet aimlessly until he is called upon to defeat the evil warlord Skeletor.
“He-Man and The Masters of the Universe” cartoon show ran from 1983 to 1985 and quickly gained a loyal fan base until now over 20 years later. The movie did not do well in the box office when first released, but managed to gain a cult following over the years.
There have been a lot of screenwriters hired to pen a live-action movie adaptation of He-Man and the Masters of the Universe, but none of theme have managed to turn the story of a tan, mostly naked barbarian/bodybuilding enthusiast for modern audiences. But after living in fear of a live-action Masters of the Universe movie for the last decade and how Hollywood would inevitably destroy my favorite nerdy franchise, for the first time, I’m actually kind of excited and hopeful about it happening. Since then, multiple iterations of the character have been seen in animation series. Do you think that this cartoon deserves a reboot over other 80’s classics? Let us know in the usual place.
