Thousands pay respects at Colchester Remembrance Day service
TYTHERINGTON Remembrance Service was graced with a fortunate dry spell at the weekend for the parade organised by the village’s branch of the Royal British Legion.
In Peterborough the Borough’s Remembrance Day Ceremony was held at the War Memorial along the Embankment.
The Parade assembled at Brentwood School, in Middleton Hall Lane before going to the War Memorial accompanied by the Brentwood Imperial Youth Band.
A smaller, separate service of remembrance took place at the recently restored memorial to the six Old Sedberghians who fell in the South African 18-99 to 1902 Boer War. A civic service followed at St Mary’s Parish Church, with the laying of wreaths. Members of the public were invited to join the Mayor for refreshments in the Council Chamber in the Municipal Building after the service. We must never forget those who have given and continue to give their lives in wars and conflicts and those who have fought for our freedom.
People of all ages will wear their poppies with pride as they pay their respects. A member of Carnforth Scouts and standards from the Dunkirk Veterans and Normandy Veterans Associations, Salvation Army and Air Training Corps took part in the parade, and Major Angela Tucker led the service, where names of the fallen were read out by Major Margaret Watkins from the Salvation Army.
Without their presence the local community turned out in force for their parade down the High Street to pay their respects.
“My thanks go to the hundreds of participants and supporters who worked together to create a very memorable day”.
