Threat on UNSW campus
Yesterday, an anonymous wrote: “I finally managed to get a handgun”.
NSW police told Honi they were “investigating comments on social media regarding a university in Sydney’s Eastern Suburbs”.
Karina Boyle, a student at the university, told the Sydney Morning Herald that she was concerned, even though security was prepared because of the threat. You wouldn’t like to think that would happen as well in Australia.
The ABC understands the threat is a general one and not directed at a specific group within the university.
The spokesperson said the campus had not been evacuated and classes are continuing as normal.
UNSW says it is liaising with the liaising with anti-terrorism and local police after a post appeared on the controversial messaging board 4chan.
The threat in question comes from forum site 4chan, where an anonymous post made last night warns: “Australians, if you study at UNSW don’t go in tomorrow”.
An email and Facebook message was circulated by UNSW on Monday, warning of a threat to the safety of students at staff at the Kensington campus.
Police have stressed that there is no direct threat at this time. “Those students who would prefer to leave campus won’t be penalised”, a spokesman said.
New South Wales Police Detective Superintendent Gavin Dengate said authorities and security would remain on campus throughout the day.
