Three each from Kentucky, IN on first Wooden watch list
The No. 15 Bears were one of the few programs to land multiple players on the list.
Former Indiana All-American and Director of Basketball Operations Calbert Cheaney was the last Hoosier to win the Wooden Award in 1993. Brown was a consensus top-5 recruit entering this year and his high school honors included McDonald’s All-American, 2015 Gatorade Georgia Boys’ Player of the Year, USA Today’s All-USA and Georgia’s Mr. Basketball.
After her standout performance in the season opener against Grambling State on Saturday, junior forward Caira Washington was named Co-Player of the Week for the Atlantic 10 conference, the conference announced Monday. The list is chosen by a preseason poll of national women’s college basketball media members.
Wooden Award announced the Women’s Preseason Top 30 Tuesday on ESPN’s SportsCenter and on espnW, and Tennessee Diamond DeShields was among the 30 players making the cut. The Wooden Award National Advisory Board will select 25 players to the Midseason Top 25 in early January. The Wooden Award Weekend, April 7-9, 2016, will honor the male and female Wooden Award winners, the top 5 All Americans, and the Legends of Coaching recipient, Coach Tubby Smith. Connecticut’s Breanna Stewart won the 2015 John R. Wooden Award.
Kentucky and IN are the only two teams with three nominees on the 50-player pre-season watch list for the John Wooden Award.
Last season, Dunn was named BIG EAST Player of the Year and BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Year.
LeVert, averaging 14.5 points, 4.0 rebounds and 6.0 assists through Michigan’s opening two games this season, is on the list for the second straight season. In 2014-15, Thompson and Amber Orrange (13.3 ppg) became the first Cardinal guards since Candice Wiggins (2007-08) to lead the team in scoring. Dunn was the first Friar to record a triple-double since Geoff McDermott accomplished the feat versus Harvard on December 22, 2006.
The Friars will return to action on Wednesday, November 18 versus Big Ten foe IL at 7 p.m.in the Gavitt Tipoff Games at the Dunkin’ Donuts Center.
