Three Held Over Minneapolis Protest Shooting
When Habu asked why they were filming, the group refused to provide a direct answer. On Tuesday, five people were shot and injured about a block from the protests.
On MPR this morning, Gov. Mark Dayton said he hoped the protests would end to ensure everyone’s safety. She said they came in with their faces covered and filmed the crowd but would not talk to people. “But I just haven’t been able to piece together enough information to say with any real clarity”.
The Black Lives Matter Minneapolis group protesting Clark’s killing said on its Facebook page that five unarmed protesters were shot by what it described as white supremacists who had been asked to leave the area and were followed out by protesters before they opened fire.
Protesters have said repeatedly they want Freeman’s office to make the decision rather than having it to go to grand jury, because they say grand juries are less likely to indict police officers in such cases. Police say Clark interfered with efforts to attend to a domestic abuse victim, scuffled with an officer and tried to reach for his gun. Some who say they saw the shooting insist Clark was handcuffed, but police dispute that. Protesters, and eventually police and paramedics arrived and attempted to help.
Minneapolis NAACP President Nekima Levy-Pounds fired up the crowd, saying: “We ain’t scared”.
On Tuesday, protesters rallied in downtown Minneapolis in response to the shooting.
One of five protesters who suffered gunshot wounds near a north Minneapolis police precinct has returned to the demonstrations, and two others are recovering.
It could not be immediately determined who was responsible for the attacks, as reported by Yahoo News.
A video of unknown origin and authenticity circulated online Friday, purporting to show two white men in a auto, displaying a pistol they said was “locked and loaded”, claiming they were en route to the Minneapolis protest.
Miski Noor, media contact for Black Lives Matter, said that “a group of white supremacists showed up at the protest, as they have done most nights”. Some made racist comments.
“We’re here for Jamar”, one said, according to Habu.
Others derided the perpetrators, alleging their assault could have been racially motivated, and called for them to be labelled “terrorists”; the act of committing terrorism is defined as “the use of violence and intimidation in the pursuit of political aims”.
One of the gunmen was wearing a mask and “shouting the ‘n-word, ‘ ” Noor said.
According to Star Tribune, three white suspects with connection with the shooting have been taken into custody.
In brief remarks outside the church where Clark’s was being held, as mourners streamed past, she said another rally was planned for Wednesday afternoon. After running about another half block, the suspects started shooting.
“It was so busy and chaotic”, Wronski-Riley said.
Clark was shot in the leg and foot after escorting several masked men away from the precinct.
“There’s no audio, but it appears after the shot was sacked, one of the officers comes back into the camera view”.
Some community members say he was handcuffed, which police dispute. “And they can’t stop us from making sure that black lives do matter”. Martin said his 19-year-old brother Tevin was shot in the stomach but was in “good condition” in intensive care.
