Three Israelis Found Guilty Of Palestinian Teen’s Murder
In a related case, a Jerusalem court earlier this month sentenced a police officer to six weeks of community service for beating Abu Khdeir’s cousin – 15-year-old Tariq Abu Khdeir, of Tampa, Florida – during a July 2014 protest over Mohammed’s killing.
The minors, whose names were not released due to their age, were found guilty on Monday of the murder of Mohammed Abu Khdeir, who was abducted outside a mosque near his home, driven to a forest, and burned alive in July 2014.
“When there is racism, there is no justice”, she said.
I srael on Sunday suspended contacts with European Union bodies involved in the peace process between Israelis and Palestinians. Ben-David lived in a Jewish settlement in the occupied West Bank and is the son an ultra-Orthodox rabbi. Did they demolish his house? He accused the attorneys for Ben-David of “misleading the court”. There is no schedule for Ben David pending the court’s review of the psychiatric opinion of his insanity plea. One teen claimed he stayed in the vehicle as Abu Khdeir was burned to death.
Hussein, Mohammad Abu Khdair’s father, said Mr Ben David was attempting to mislead the court. “They are going to let them go free”. In a pre-trial hearing, he shouted: “I am the Messiah!” It is not going to grant Palestinians a fair outcome. After Monday’s decision, Abu Khdeir said he had “had enough”. “It could take years”.
From the outset of the trial the Abu Khdeir family was not convinced Israel would hand down harsh sentences. “It is beyond words”, said Nasser Dawabsheh, 42.
The three Jewish suspects were arrested several days later. “This non-conviction joins the legal system’s reluctance to put to trial the killers of the Dawabsha family, whose identities are known to the defense establishment”, he told the NRG website, as cited by the Times of Israel. A lawyer for the family said his body had been burnt beyond recognition. “They believe Israelis who commit crimes against Palestinians are hardly ever held to account”, she said.
Ezra Schwartz, an 18-year old American on a gap year in an Israeli yeshiva and Palestinian Shadi Arafeh, 24, of Hebron, were pronounced dead at the scene.
Many Israelis say they were appalled by the revenge killing, which was widely condemned even as it exposed Israel to charges that it turned a blind eye toward Jewish extremism.
As of Tuesday, no charges had been brought against any suspects in the Dawabsheh killings.
Judge Jacob Zaban said the late timing of the plea was “against regular and appropriate protocol”, but still agreed to consider it.
Only 10 minutes later, a man aged about 25 was lightly wounded in the Beit Israel neighborhood in Jerusalem.
On Dec. 20, the court is set to meet to discuss whether to admit the psychological evaluation of Ben-David.
