Three Kenyan police reported held over disappearances, rights group says two dead
The bodies were found in a river northeast of Nairobi.
Kimani’s body was identified by friend and fellow lawyer Duncan Kinuthia.
Mr Kimani was working for a U.S. legal charity, the International Justice Mission, which focuses on cases of police abuse of power.
Earlier lawyer John Khaminwa for LSK asked the judge to summon Director of Public Prosecutions Keriako Tobiko, DCI Ndegwa Muhoro, IG Joseph Boinett and his deputy Joel Kitili to explain the mysterious circumstances under which the three disappeared.
The International Justice Mission human rights defender was kidnapped alongside his client Josephat Mwenda (complainant) and a taxi driver Joseph Muiruri at around 12:00pm after a Court hearing.
Boinnet insisted that the behaviour of the three arrested officers ” is not a representative of the national police”, rejecting claims that death squads were operating within the force.
The bodies are said to have been found at around 3PM on Thursday in gunny bags.
They also want the lawyer’s body to be placed under the custody of the court to ensure evidence is not tampered with.
The bodies of a human rights lawyer and another missing man were found in a Kenyan river Friday, and the country’s police chief said three police officers have been arrested and will be charged with murder.
Boinnet spoke yesterday as two bodies thought to be those of the missing men were retrieved from a river in central Kenya.
The complainant had accused the AP officer of shooting him and levelling fraudulent and false charges against him, a situation that made him seek help from the Independent Police Oversight Authority (IPOA).
The case accuses local police of harassing and intimidating Mwenda in a bid to have him withdraw a complaint against a senior officer with the local Administration Police unit who he says shot him without provocation during a traffic stop in April 2015.
“So far we are talking of six dead”, he said, noting that the attack had happened on the road between Wargadud and Elwak.
“It appears that Willie, Joseph and Josephat were abducted as they departed judicial proceedings on police abuse”, Senator Corker said.
The United States warned its citizens on Thursday against traveling near the border with Somalia because of threats from al Shabaab.
