Three people arrested in Chicago protests
“Several protesters were seen lying face-down on the ground in handcuffs”. He didn’t give details. “16 shots!” and stopped traffic for blocks to express their anger over the October 20, 2014, killing of McDonald and the subsequent investigation, which they say was mishandled.
On Friday, a group of protesters cut off Jackson’s speech on the McDonald shooting when they pulled the leader’s microphone and stormed the stairs where he spoke outside the historic Water Tower on Michigan Avenue.
All protests yesterday were peaceful; mainly involving chants, placards and blocking entrances to stores. “People have a right to be angry, people have a right to protest”.
Dozens of protesters also blocked doors at Neiman Marcus, Saks and Tiffany & Co.
But shoppers still crowded the sidewalks and seemed to take the disturbance in stride. Some even snapped photos of the crowd.
The footage shows McDonald jogging down a street and then veering away from Officer Jason Van Dyke and another officer who emerge from a police SUV drawing their guns. “Shut this down! Shut this down!” The officer is no longer being paid by the Chicago Police Department.
The responding officers didn’t have a Taser.
“The only thing new is that there’s a video of this shooting”, Scott said.
Monica Xue, a Chinese tourist visiting from California, told Xinhua that she didn’t mind the disruptions. Shut it down! She said she was representing her family, including her three grandchildren.
“That’s why we’re not having problems that other cities are having, or have had in the past”, McCarthy said before Friday’s march.
One of the demands by the protesters is the resignation of State’s Attorney Anita Alvarez, who they say tried to cover up last year’s police killing of LaQuan McDonald.
Tyshawn Lee’s murder has prompted a good deal of outrage and soul-searching in Chicago, but nothing like the marches and demonstrations protesting the death of Laquan McDonald. The protester happens to be the son of Minneapolis Congressman Keith Ellison, the co-chair of the Congressional Progressive Caucus and the first Muslim member of Congress in history. To be sure, though, Chicago’s murder rate – at 17 per 100,000 people – is significantly higher than the other cities over the same period.
On Saturday, shopping on Michigan Avenue returned to normal, but the Rev. Marshall Hatch said protesters will hold additional marches in coming days. But compare that to the Cincinnati case last summer in which black driver Samuel DuBose was fatally shot on camera by University of Cincinnati police officer Ray Tensing during a routine traffic stop. “I didn’t know they were going to delete it”.
Frank Chapman, 73, of Chicago, said the video confirms what activists have said for years about Chicago police brutality.
Rev. Jesse Jackson, who led a large protest on Black Friday along the Mag Mile, scheduled another event at 11:30 a.m.at the Rainbow PUSH Coalition headquarters at 930 E. 50th St. The Chicago police had been hiding the video for a year before it was discovered. “What’s interesting is what effect the recent demonstrations have had on police behavior – and the behavior of prosecutors and other public officials, including police chiefs and mayors”, he added. McDonald – who was holding a knife when he was shot and had earlier slashed the tires of a police cruiser – made no threatening gestures to justify the use of deadly force, Alvarez said.
