Three Police Officers Dead, Three Wounded in Shooting in Baton Rouge
The Henderson Police Department announced Sunday that all officers will patrol in two-officer units.
Obama said the motive behind Sunday’s killing of three officers in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, was still unknown.
The shooting happened less than a mile from that city’s police headquarters and a little more than a week after a gunman killed five officers in Dallas at the end of an otherwise peaceful march protesting police-involved deaths of black men, including one in Baton Rouge. And we as a nation have to be loud and clear that nothing justifies violence against law enforcement.
Republican Donald Trump blamed a “lack of leadership” for Sunday’s shootings. And that is why it is so important that everyone, regardless of race, or political party, or profession, regardless of what organizations you are a part of, everyone right now, focus on words and actions that can unite this country, rather than divide it further.
He said the country doesn’t need inflammatory rhetoric or careless accusations. “We need to temper our words and open our hearts, all of us”.
A warning issued by the FBI’s New Orleans field office on July 7 mentioned “threats to law enforcement and potential threats to the safety of the general public” stemming from Sterling’s shooting.
A spokesman for the Louisiana governor says that the governor is at the hospital where police officers were taken following a shooting in Baton Rouge. He said the FBI is investigating the incident.
The White House says President Barack Obama has been briefed on the shooting of police officers in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and has asked to be updated throughout the day as more details become available.
Much as he did following the deadly police ambush in Dallas last week, President Obama has responded, delivering remarks to assembled media at the White House press briefing room late Sunday afternoon.
“We stand in solidarity and strength with every state trooper, police officer, sheriff’s deputy, federal agent, marshal, and any other law enforcement professional in the United States”.
“Nor will today’s killer”. “If they are wearing army fatigues; if they are wearing all black; if they are wearing a mask; if they are wearing anything that’s out there, please, give us a call”, he said. “That decision is all of ours”, Obama said. He emerged from the session saying “we’re not even close” to the point where minority communities could feel confident that police departments were serving them with respect and equality or where police departments could feel adequately supported at all levels. “We just said a prayer in the vehicle for the families”.
Kip Holden, the mayor-president of East Baton Rouge Parish Kip Holden, said authorities were still trying to get a handle on the situation, but added, The count is three officers dead possibly. Dallas police were defending protesters in that city when the gunman opened fire on them.
