Three police officers shot dead in Baton Rouge, Lousiana
“Unknown where the subject’s shooting from!” one officer yells on the recording.
“He did not judge, never met a stranger and always remained fair”, said close friend Gelrod Armstrong, who said Jackson was the kind of person who could have altered what happened Sunday if he had only had a chance to speak to the shooter, Gavin Long of Kansas City, Mo. Three of those have died.
Also killed was 45-year-old Brad Garafola, who had a 24-year career as a sheriff’s deputy. One of the officers he killed was black, the other two were white.
Nicholas Tullier, 41, is now in critical condition. He has 18 years of service with the office.
Long found Tullier there, firing into the deputy’s auto before before exchanging gunfire with Deputy Bruce Simmons, 57.
The status of the third injured officer is unclear at this time, but he sustained non-life threatening injuries. “He was an fantastic husband, an outstanding father, respectful son and a loving brother and an wonderful uncle”. It’s only fighting back or money. “Bring us together, oh God”. Police have said only that officers were contacted about a man “carrying a weapon, carrying a rifle” at about 8:40am on Sunday, and after officers in the area spotted the man, a shootout ensued.
“You see that there are some good folks on both sides that are trying, it’s just such rough situation, such a tiring situation for all parties involved”, Collins said. “We will do it with the grace of loved ones who even in their grief have spoken out against vengeance toward police”.
“After he was finished here I have no doubt he was heading to our headquarters, and he was going to take more lives, ” he said.
Timothy Williams claimed he witnessed the shooting unfold from across the street.
The horrific scene unfolded in a matter of minutes, a black-clad man with military training stalking law enforcement officers and ignoring horrified onlookers as he shot anyone he could find wearing a badge.
The press conference also cleared the air over who placed the initial 911 call that some believed Long had used to lure the officers towards him. They say the men were dressed in all black, they changed clothes inside the store, then left in a silver Nissan with a Texas license plate. The investigation is ongoing.
At the B Quick gas station where the shootings occurred, people left flowers and balloons in memory of the slain officers. Investigators say they had no connection to the shooting.
Chuck Canterbury, president of the Fraternal Order of Police, welcomed Obama’s letter and said law enforcement can not be held responsible for such issues as poverty, unemployment or lack of mental health services, a point the president touched on in the letter.
“LSU PD has put more officers on patrol and has increased the frequency of its patrols on campus, and is supporting the city and sheriff’s law enforcement agencies”.
Messages from across the globe have been coming in to the WAFB newsroom.
