Three-way tie for Open lead, including amateur
Jordan Spieth supporters brought a little bit of Austin to St. Andrews, Scotland on Sunday. He took 10 putts on the inward nine.
RUSSELL CHEYNE/REUTERS Dunne acknowledges the crowd as he walks off the 18th green.
Dunne, from Ireland, showed admirable levels of composure to raise hope of a first victor of The Open Championship since Bobby Jones lifted the claret jug for a third time in 1930.
Dunne shot a 6-under 66 for a 12-under 204 total heading to Monday’s decisive round. “If we were playing an amateur event here, I wouldn’t be too surprised by the scores I shot”. “It’s close to clicking, it just hasn’t quite happened yet”. Hopefully I can do it again [Monday]. But whether I do or not, Ill survive either way..
The way the weather-delayed Open ended on Sunday, expect just about anything.
Oosthuizen, who won the Open Championship also over the Old Course in 2010, birdied the last hole after he sent his iron approach within three feet of the flag. Day is just as big of a threat. A rainy weekend pushed play back and has forced a Monday finish for the tournament, something no one is complaining about as they return to work. Niebrugge, Sergio Garcia, Justin Rose, Retief Goosen, Richard Streb, Adam Scott, Zach Johnson and Danny Willet.
Top Scot Paul Lawrie, the 1999 Open champion, will provide plenty for the home fans to cheer about as he stands alone in third at eight under.
Then came Chambers Bay, where – somehow – he was tied with Branden Grace, Dustin Johnson and Spieth with 18 holes remaining.
In the first Monday finish at the Open in 27 years, the 21-year-old will try to match Ben Hogan’s rare feat of claiming the third leg of the Grand Slam.
It’s a odd marriage, but Dunne is quickly becoming a name that could rival that of not only Spieth but also of Rory McIlroy, who missed the Open this weekend and continues to have a tough year.
Suddenly, Spieth started to see putts fall – both for birdie and par.
“Only one person has done it before”, he said.
Spieth said that he is fully aware of what is at stake and he will settle for nothing less than winning.
“I know it’s easier said than done, but when you say added pressure, most people associate that with negativity or something that can hinder what’s comfortable”.
After a 7am restart on the Old Course, Johnson had seen his ball roll off the 14th green in winds gusting up to 45mph during the 32 minutes of action possible before play was suspended.
Thats what made Dustin Johnsons collapse so shocking. It didn’t get any better on the back side, where his lone birdie at the 15th was wiped out by bogeys on the final three holes.
What ran in front of Robert Streb’s shot at the British Open? “I had a lull on Friday and Saturday, but nothing significant, but stayed in it and waited for the opportunities and made a few”.
“As far as handling it, I don’t look at it as a negative thing”. “Just because the game in amateur golf across the world now I think is getting more diverse and more intense, and I think it’s awesome for guys to step up and do this”.
