TIFF 2015: Benicio Del Toro teases Star Wars role
The film now has a 94 percent positive rating on Rotten Tomatoes and the cast promised the reviews are accurate.
Sicario is a film of a cynical and much-compromised America at war. The vomiting is not as random as you’d think: the new movie directed by Denis Villeneuve has such grim imagery, the characters, Federal Bureau of Investigation agents raiding a house in the Arizona desert double over in wet heaves in the dry courtyard.
“He knows a lot about that world being involved in movies and coming back with people who were involved in drug wars”, says Villeneuve. Ultimately, all that truly happens to the characters we care about is erosion, which is probably very truthful but feels neither particularly dramatic nor, in the context of a cartel procedural, particularly new. But Blunt’s Mercer is saddled with being the film’s moral conscience, the letter-of-the-law abiding FBI agent who is horrified when she discovers these ethical breaches and refuses to take a hand in them.
While Sicario is intense from start to finish thanks to its top-notch direction, editing and cinematography, if there’s a qualm to be had it’s in Taylor Sheridan’s heavy-handed, often rhetorical script. Despite how one might feel about The Counselor, the same certainly can’t be said for Cormac McCarthy’s atypically eccentric work.
The British star, who became an American citizen last month, has topped a short list of actresses to portray action-heavy roles, especially after starring in “Edge of Tomorrow” with Tom Cruise. “I don’t want to be anointed the next action star because I don’t want to go to the gym all the time”. We’ve long speculated that the Guardians of the Galaxy scene stealer and star of the upcoming film Sicario, would be a Sith-like villain…or at least a Dark Side type character. We’ll keep you posted when we hear more on Del Toro’s role. “We are just beginning and I am happy to contribute”. The critical pinnacle of his career came in his Oscar-winning performance as an honest Mexico police officer in Steven Soderbergh’s “Traffic“. “I like seeing people who cope”. The climactic action sequence is shot unlike any I can remember seeing before: The camera moves like it’s waiting for a serial killer to jump out from behind every corner, gunshots are played for jump scares, and the screen is suddenly full of monsters instead of soldiers.
Benicio del Toro has been rumored to not only be a part of Star Wars: Episode VIII, but more specifically, playing a villain.
“Ehhh, the thing is, they don’t let me talk too much about it. I’m like the villain”.
