Tiger fires 3-under 68 in Round 3 of Wells Fargo Championship
Jason Day sputtered at the start and hit his stride on the back nine for a 4-under 67 to build a two-shot lead going into the final round of the Wells Fargo Championship and a chance for his second victory this year.
Woods said on a few of the holes he had a lot trouble reading the putts.
That was before Peterson came to life late in his round. McIlroy three-putted the 18th and still shot 5 under. It’s nearly comical that he hasn’t found a way to finally get his hands on the trophy.
The Ulsterman had a steady start to his Saturday, shooting -2 on the front nine to go level par for the tournament. “I’m super, super excited”, Watney said.
“My ball-striking’s been fine, I just haven’t made anything”, he said. “It’s exciting and I’m definitely happy with how I handled myself, especially through the first eight holes, more so than I was of the back nine”.
CHARLOTTE (North Carolina) • Tiger Woods blamed his inability to adjust to slow greens for another mediocre putting performance in round two of the Wells Fargo Championship on Friday. He’s playing with an nearly unshakeable confidence, reminiscent of his play two years ago. Five events later, he still needs $318,096 and has this week, and then the FedEx St. Jude Classic and Travelers Championship.
And then there’s Mickelson, who is a perennial contender at Quail Hollow but has never won the tournament in 14 previous tries.
Another superb short iron left him with a simple putt for birdie on the 15th, but a bogey at the turn – finding the water hazard down the left-hand side of the 18th fairway, dropped him back to two under.
With his combination of power and the most statistically effective putting stroke on the PGA Tour this season, it’s likely someone will have to chase down Day rather than have him back up.
Most gamers have eyes on Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy each week they’re in the field and this week isn’t any different. Paul Casey (69-68) and Charl Schwartzel (70-67) are two strokes behind. He shot 72-72 to make the cut at +2, one off the line.
“But with the conditions being softer today and moving today, I felt like I needed to get after it, and I was able to do that”. “We’re all going to be close”.
Woods reeled off three birdies in four holes, his longest putt a 13-footer at the fifth to open the run, but a bogey at the ninth set him back.
It was a tough adjustment for Woods and everyone else. When you’ve reached the pinnacle, what else is left to play for?
“I’m just not that comfortable with anything right now, ” the four-time major champion said.
“San Antonio was really, really tight, and I like to hit my low drivers and I feel really confident with that”, Niemann said. “I just couldn’t find the face”.
He was tied for 35th, his worst position after the opening round since he was tied for 61st at Riviera in February. “The score sort of flatters me”, he said. Thursday’s scores were thrown out.
