Tiger to play this week’s Wyndham for 1st time
Woods had committed to the coming week’s Wyndham Championship, his hand forced by the Friday night entry deadline, but his comments after his round Saturday suggested that he might be prepared to call it a season after 28 rounds spread over 10 events. Woods’ dominance and the passion he displayed on the biggest stages were instrumental in golf’s growth since the mid-1990s, and Spieth has the opportunity to make a similar impact for the next 15 years.
On Monday morning, Wyndham tournament director Mark Brazil sent out a brief tweet: “Bam!” “That’s the only history I’ll be thinking of when we step on the first tee is you can hoist that trophy tomorrow [Sunday] and make it happen”. A rather paltry offering of 20 players, 18 of which are male, can be used for a round of golf in PGA Tour.
Steinberg declined to say what factors would go into the decision.
That is two outside the expected cut line. They cannot play in the event if they have not gone through this procedure.
Woods maintains that he felt in control over his game, reason enough to be positive. Woods is 186 points out of the last spot. If things don’t change drastically over the last five holes here, Woods would have to finish at least second alone next week in the regular-season finale in Greensboro, North Carolina, to reach the top 125. Surely, for four days, he will turn the clock back a decade or so and mesmerize us as he did in his glory years.
Deluded Tiger Woods reckons he is returning to form – despite missing out on the cut for his third major in a row. If he wants to prevent this from happening next year, he needs to start getting some competitive swings under his belt. Woods will always draw an enormous gallery, even if it’s far more likely that he’ll miss the cut than it is that he’ll win the tournament (and that’s clearly the case now). After two early birdies Friday, he double-bogeyed the fourth hole, then bogeyed the eighth. Play was suspended today with Woods still having to play five more holes. Play is scheduled to resume at 8 a.m. ET.
When Day was 12, his father Alvin Day unfortunately passed away.
Also on the bubble: Luke Donald is 124th, followed by Charl Schwartzel, Scott Langley, Seung-Yul Noh, S.J. Park and last year’s victor, Camilo Villegas. The starting field of 125 in The Barclays, including Utah natives Daniel Summerhays and Zac Blair, will be cut to 100, 70 and 30 for subsequent tournaments, ending with the Tour Championship.
“It’s not really about the season; it’s about the year”, said Woods, who plans to play in a handful of events in the United States and overseas between now and his 40th birthday on December 30.
