Tiger Woods expecting to win a title “soon”
On the par-5 17th hole, Woods got up and down from 92 feet for birdie.
“I’m close, I have been close to winning tournaments this year”, Woods told reporters at Ridgewood Country Club, New Jersey. He is 10 strokes back of three-time major victor Brooks Koepka and Jamie Lovemark in a tie for 67th place. “These first three events are very important and you just need to treat it like I do every other tournament and try to give myself a chance to win”. “I had a hard time seeing my lines, and consequently I didn’t make anything”.
“This has been, as I’ve said before, this has been a blessing, but man, it’s been so special to have this opportunity again”, Woods said.
Unsurprisingly, he headed to the practice green immediately after his round.
With the points worth quadruple value, the top 100 after this week advance to the second stage at the TPC Boston next week, with the top 70 reaching the BMW Championship at Aronimink and the top 30 going to the Tour Championship at East Lake, which most players are starting to regard as the promised land.
His lone highlights (and only two birdies) came at two of the three par 5s on the course. But he’s determined not to get too excited or get ahead of himself.
“People understand that. I think everyone can relate to that, because they have all been through it”. “I’m very close to making that happen”.
“It’s something that I really would like to win”. You can play a little more free.
Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson will go head-to-head in a winner-take-all $9 million (7.78 million euro) duel in Las Vegas in November, it was announced on Wednesday. “I’m just trying to hit the correct shot”. The last two days, it’s been that way.
“I guess everyone knows I have struggled”. “You’ve just got to be in it to win it”. “I’ve never played one, but I’d be happy to do it if anybody wants to play”.
“I think if I can get to double digits [under par], that would be nice”, he said. I’m not anxious about it. The only thing I was competing in was who could eat the most.
Woods is healthy for the first time in in years.
He hit 13 of 18 greens after hitting 16 greens on Friday, and at least got his putt total under 30 (28) after taking a whopping 35 in the second round. ‘Joey, I see three different breaks here.’ He said, ‘Yeah, so do I’.
“They know that I’m at the tail end of my career”.
On Saturday, Mickelson delivered a classic TV moment while watching his tee shot at a par-3 when a fan compared his shot to Tiger Woods effort hours earlier. “If I’m at home and it’s not on Sky (Sports), then I probably won’t go out of my way to watch it”. I can’t claim that. This is the fourth time that Ridgewood has played host to this event, the most of any in the 12-year history of the FedExCup. He did an incredible job.
“So when you have these guys hanging around, it’s special. He’s an incredible person”.
