Tiger Woods ignores kids looking for autographs at Open
The Englishman fired in six birdies and no bogeys on a faultless second day at Carnoustie.
The key was not that he had just 26 putts but that he avoided most of the punishing Carnoustie bunkers.
On Thursday, his tee shots barely troubled the fairway, but it was part of the tactic he adopted of hitting long, rather than using irons.
Dustin Johnson was headed toward being the first No. 1 player in the world to miss the cut at the Open since Luke Donald in 2011 at Royal St. George’s. “This is a golf course you have to be patient on, and I hung in there”.
Tiger Woods is a 14-time major victor, however, he has angered golf fans this afternoon after pushing away children eagerly waiting for his autograph at The Open.
That’s what left McIlroy with the taste of a two-week-old pimento cheese sandwich in his mouth after the Masters in April. “And I did not get off to exactly the best start, being 2-over through three”.
But at a damp and chilly Carnoustie, McIlroy said that while he may not enjoy the adverse conditions any better, he has “definitely learned to handle it a little better”. “I am driving the ball really well”.
He still made bogey. “It more kind of fires me up a little”. Just not good enough.
Padraig Harrington was one over the for day, six over in total, after 11 holes.
“It was a disappointing finish”, said Harrington. I think with some of the spots I hit it off the tee I would take it. A rugged start, a strong recovery, a few putts for birdie, a few he missed for par, and it added to an even-par 71.
Meanwhile, Kisner lives in a house of champions and now he’s determined not to be the odd one out.
Rory McIlroy has the word “NASTY” written on the soles of his golf shoes and he’s talking about “going out swinging” in a bid to end his four-year drought in the majors. They’re all great people.
World number 33 Kisner has not finished better than equal 54th in three appearances at the Open, but is coming to terms with a type of game rarely played on the soft and lush courses of the US PGA Tour. He’s firmly in the hunt and appears to be getting better as the week progresses.
The shot came out hot and right at them. But undoubtedly, most were there to watch Spieth.
“Hit the same club as the approach”, Kisner said.
A 65, if possible, would get McIlroy to -10 going into the final round. And on the greens, Spieth needed just 25 putts to get around Friday, a credit to a tweak to his putting setup that Spieth worked on Thursday afternoon and Friday pre-round.
BBC Two will show two hours of highlights after each day’s play from 8pm to 10pm.
