Tiger Woods looks to bounce back at the Wyndham Championship
Golf: Tiger Woods confirmed his participation in this week’s Wyndham Championship, after previously hedging his bet on whether he would play the PGA Tour event in North Carolina.
Jones resumed his round with a tough fairway bunker shot on the fourth hole but made par.
“I feel like I’m kind of getting into a nice rhythm this week which is unfortunate because I always try to peak for the majors and last week I didn’t so it’s always a work in progress”.
Should Woods fail to qualify for the second year in a row, his next PGA Tour start will not be until the Frys.com Open in October. “I think he’s lost and he continues to go in the wrong direction”. Only the top 125 players will make it to The Barclays, which means he probably needs a victory in his first visit here.
This year at St. Andrews the entire golf course was covered with free WiFi access for the galleries. Prior to 2014, he missed three cuts in majors as a pro. And to have the control that I need to have going forward…
It didn’t hurt Woods that he holed a 55-yard flop shot for a birdie on his first hole (the 10th) as well as two lengthy par putts, including a 12-footer on the ninth, his last. Besides making the playoffs, it would validate his claims that his game is close to being back, even though results say otherwise. In his last 6 starts he has a 5th place finish, T12 and T4 just two weeks ago.
The former world No 1, who said he had “a blast” playing a pro-am round with National Basketball Association All-Star Chris Paul yesterday, has endured a bad time of it this season. “I felt like I was hitting the ball good enough and just kept progressing, and today was just a continuation of it”.
For some time, critics have lamented Woods’ schedule, for decades a relatively set lineup of majors, World Golf Championships and assorted top-tier stops where he’d had success in the past, like the Arnold Palmer Invitational and Farmers Insurance Open.
“My mom took a second mortgage out on the house, borrowed money from my aunt and uncle, just to get me away from where I was to go to school, 7 hours drive”, said Day.
In 10 previous events this year, Woods has missed the cut in four of them and withdrew from another.
Now ranked No. 286 in the world, Woods is playing Wyndham for the first time as a last gasp attempt to make the FedEx Cup play-offs next week.
Jones was tied for the lead at nine-under-par with fellow Australian Jason Day when Friday’s play was halted due to an approaching thunderstorm at the Whistling Straits course in Kohler, Wisconsin.
The course they’ll be playing is the historical home of the Greensboro Open which has hosted the Wyndham Championship for the last seven seasons consecutively dating back to 2008.
“If not then I’ve got a big break and some overseas stuff that I’ve got to do later in the year”.
“It’s going to be a lot of irons off the tee, but it wasn’t the case because it’s so wet”, Woods said.
