Tiger Woods misses cut at PGA Championship
A stress-free day, the Wisconsin player called it.
“Who are two sleeper picks this week at Whistling Straits?” Jordan Spieth is 43 under so far.
Woods keeps saying he needs to play more to improve. But there will be two of them knocking the ball around Whistling Straits in the third round Saturday. As he did on the par-5 fifth with a nifty up-and-down. This is despite the trouble that he has had with his game and the fact that he has not won a major since his one-legged victory at the US Open in 2008. “I don’t really want to blame it on rust, but I didn’t putt as well as I would have liked”. ” … For me, it’s incredible to be in the lead at a major”.
“I’ve been in the lead on a tour event, but a major’s a different story”, Jones later told reporters. But points are five times greater in the playoff events, allowing for more movement if a player has success. This year, I don’t think it’s going to be a surprise.
Putting, he said, was his downfall.
Day recovered to birdie 17 and finish the day on 15-under-par. He qualified by finishing 10th in the Professional National Championship, and he had the honors of hitting first tee shot. I just need to do both at the same time.
“People kept asking me this week: Is it your season [over]?”
Rose completed his second round where he started – at 8 under. At 6 over – and the projected cut line at 2 over – Rainaud will need to make some birdies when play resumes. “It’s a good idea to come back in the morning”. It is a very daunting tee shot. “Hence I took the break to try and figure it out”.
He’s likely to get it, too, thanks to yet another letdown in a major arena he once owned. Jason is playing very well.
“Probably one of the worst putting rounds I’ve had in a long time”, he said. His first shot was a tough chip he sent 20 feet past the hole at No. 14. And even though he needed only 28 putts, McIlroy felt he didn’t capitalize on enough chances, or save par often enough when he missed greens.
If there was anyone capable of rebounding from a first-round 89 – which left him last in the 156-player field – it was Dan Venezio, an assistant pro at Myopia Hunt Club. Two more birdies on 13 and 14 followed.
Woods entered the Wyndham Championship next week.
“I finally figured something out on the putting green today, but the damage was already done”, Woods said. “I finally rolled the ball coming in and unfortunately it was a little too late”.
For the third time in a row at a major championship, he missed the cut.
So what next? That question has rarely been quite so straightforward for Woods. If he does, he would be the first golfer since the playoffs began in 2007 to qualify by virtue of winning the Tour season’s final tournament.
While disappointed by missing the cut, Woods sees good things ahead.
His plans include appearances at the season-opening Frys.com Open, which starts on Oct. 15, and the Bridgestone America’s Golf Cup in Mexico, from Oct. 21-25. It’s the final event before the start of the FedEx Cup playoffs.
It has become fair game to wonder what sort of motivation, if any, Tiger Woods is finding these days for golf.
“That’s the fun part”, he said.
