Tigers anxious about fan safety after 4-0 loss
The game was Prince Fielder’s first at Comerica Park since he was traded to the Rangers after the 2013 season, and he was loudly booed in every at-bat. Unfortunately the offense didn’t do the same for him. Texas scored four runs on five hits in the third inning.
Wade Miley (10-9) left in the eighth inning, allowing just one run. He began play with only one hit in his previous 16 at-bats.
The Tigers bullpen was solid.
OK, raise your hand if you expected Drew VerHagen – he of the four career appearances, and eight big-league innings pitched – to be the calmest pitcher to take the mound for the Detroit Tigers on Saturday. He struck out four and walked one. Castellanos tripled in the sixth.
“I’m throwing pretty much the same stuff I’ve thrown since I was 25 years old”, Wolf said.
Randy Wolf: He needed to eat some innings.
Wolf had problems the second time through the Texas lineup, allowing five straight singles in the third inning. Yovani Gallardo threw six scoreless innings and Adrian Beltre had three hits Saturday.
But, Detroit made it interesting at the end when Ian Kinsler smashed a three-run homer to pull Detroit within two runs, 5-3. The Tigers have won five of their last six when scoring more than three runs. They didn’t score once. The Tigers are now tearing the cover off the ball with Miguel Cabrera now healthy. The teams competing for the Wild Card in the American League have not been able to really distance themselves yet from the rest of the pack, making the last month or so of the season interesting.
The Major League Baseball spoke about it in June, too, sending out a statement that read, in part: “Fan safety is our foremost goal for all those who choose to support our game by visiting our ballparks and we will always strive for that experience to be safe and fan-friendly”.
Duda goes on DL • Mets first baseman Lucas Duda landed on the disabled list on Saturday, a day after he was forced to depart a game against the Colorado Rockies in the seventh inning when his back locked up, ESPN.com reported.
Tomlin only allowed Alex Rodriguez’s 680th career home run leading off the fourth and a double to Chase Headley in seven deliberate innings.
