Tigers come from behind to beat Minnesota
The Tigers battled all the way back from a 4-0 deficit to hang a soul-crushing defeat on their division rival Twins who are still in the thick of the American League Wild Card race.
There will be two more evening games at Comerica Park against the Twins this weekend, as the Tigers will conclude the regular season with 6-games on the road. With the Twins up 4-2 in the seventh inning with two outs and two runners on Perkins entered the game to get the final out of the inning. Right-hander Neftali Feliz earned his ninth save of the season, and his third with Detroit. With men on second and third, Perkins came on and walked Miguel Cabrera before allowing Martinezs tying double. The play still scored Miguel Sano, Torii Hunter, and Trevor Plouffe to give the Twins the 3-0 lead.
All six Tiger runs came after the fourth inning.
The Tigers took two of three from the Twins last week, including a 11th inning victory to win the series, but it is too little, too late for Detroit.
Joe Mauer’s span of 43 games reaching base came to an end as Minnesota managed two hits, dipping its average in Detroit to.180 with 1.9 runs per game this year.
The game was tied at 4-4 when Nick Castellanos doubled to lead off the eighth inning. Davis also singled in the contest, finishing the night 2-for-4 and is now hitting.259/.308/.450 with eight homers and 29 RBI on the year. September. Eddie Rosario smoked a bases-clearing triple and then Eduardo Escobar popped out to Ian Kinsler, except Rosario headed for home and Kinsler threw the ball past James McCann’s glove and Rosario was safe at home. “He had a tough time finding the strike zone against Gose at the plate and I got a really good fastball to hit”, Kinsler said. But left fielder Eddie Rosario deserves credit for making a very nice play to cut off the ball and a quick throw once he did. Minnesotas Mike Pelfrey gave up one run and six hits in five innings, striking out seven.
Before Rosario, the last player, rookie or otherwise, with at least 15 triples and 15 outfield assists was Johnny Callison of the 1965 Philadelphia Phillies.
The Twins are now 1-6 at Detroit this season. The 24-year-old left-hander has allowed three hits or fewer in three straight starts. After Cespedes was traded to the New York Mets before the non-waiver deadline, many thought that the Tigers would try to bring him back this winter, but his price tag may have soared higher than originally anticipated. “So I’ve enjoyed it. I’ve said all along, despite what’s written, people around town are great to me”. It’s completely on me.
Tigers shortstop Andrew Romine left the game in the fifth inning because of right groin soreness.
