Tigers trade David Price to Toronto
The Rangers were reported during the past week as one of the favorites for Hamels along with the Los Angeles Dodgers and now he is on his way to Texas.
The Yankees will not sit idly by in the David Price sweepstakes, which officially began in earnest Wednesday when Tigers general manager Dave Dombrowski said all impending free agents on his roster, including the former Cy Young Award victor, are available. They are eight games back of the Yankees, and in fourth place in the AL East, but they just went all in for a playoff run by shipping several prospects and Jose Reyes to the Colorado Rockies for Troy Tulowitzki.
Daniel Norris is the #18 best prospect according to Baseball America prior to 2015.
That has been the major sticking point with the Phillies as they try to move lefthander Cole Hamels, whom the Yankees have an interest.
Price is the second major acquisition for the Blue Jays this week.
Nonetheless, it is believed the Tigers, who are hearing from multiple clubs fixated on Price, are firm in wanting Urias in any deal with the Dodgers.
In fact, Nightengale goes on to state that the compensatory pick acquired from the Marlins could be flipped as a piece to help get a Price deal done.
Why didn’t Dodgers land Hamels or Price? The Dodgers are looking to add depth to their pitching rotation to compliment the dynamic duo of Clayton Kershaw and Zack Greinke. For a team that has already invested over $275 million in payroll on the 2015 team, they might as well invest a little more. To get the pitchers they wanted in Alex Wood, Mat Latos and Luis Avilan from Atlanta and Miami, they took on more than $40 million in commitments and unwanted contracts.
In the years to come, though, Giants fans might watch an Urias, a Seager – or even Jose Peraza, the blazing, 21-year-old middle infielder the Dodgers plucked from the Braves in the three-team trade – and wish their rivals had been less protective of their prospects.
-Why did the Dodgers designate Michael Morse for assignment, and does this mean he could return to the Giants?
So will the Giants do ANYTHING?
As for the rotation, a pitcher such as the Reds’ Mike Leake might be a more accessible target as a free agent this winter. Labourt is a hard thrower who pitched in the Futures Game this season, but may end up slated for the bullpen down the road.
