Tim Cook prefers augmented reality to virtual reality because it’s more social
The new iPhone 7 models go on sale starting Friday while the wireless AirPods won’t be available until later next month.
Apple CEO Tim Cook wants to reassure you that you don’t have to worry about the AirPods falling out of your ears. That is not to say that cook does not believe virtual reality does not have its uses or that it will not be successful.
That’s a major takeaway from an interview Apple’s CEO had with ABC News, published Wednesday, in which Cook said he saw bigger possibilities for AR than VR, since AR allows people to be more “present”.
“Dancing? Twerking?” host Robin Roberts asked.
Roberts joked with Cook that ABC News colleague Michael Strahan was convinced he was going to lose the new phones, which appear similar to Apple’s standard in-ear headphones, but connect wirelessly to the phone. Alternatively, users can buy the wireless AirPods for $159.
Google and Apple are investing heavily in both AR and VR, but there haven’t been any major successes yet despite a lot of chatter due to the current level of “hardware and display technology and the lack of content”.
“I’ve been wearing them for a while and because they don’t have wires on them, the wires tend to help the earbud to fall out because it applies weight on those”, he said. You know how you walk around with the earbuds and they’re constantly getting caught on something? “I have never personally had one fall out since I’ve been using it”, he said.
“Magnetically, they’re sort of sucked down into the case”.
