Tim Howard ready to return to the US national team
With the 2018 World Cup so far away, the smart play would be to stick with the younger Guzan and have the elder Howard in the team as an insurance policy. The next worldwide friendly for the USMNT is on September 4 against Peru, and Howard readily admitted that’s when he’d like to be back in action for his country.
In an interview with Everton TV, Howard said he has already discussed his return with U.S. coach Jurgen Klinsmann.
America’s top goalkeeper went on sabbatical from worldwide duty after last summer’s World Cup, but told the website for his English club Everton that it’s time to suit up for U.S. Soccer again.
The USMNT suffered an upset loss in the Gold Cup semifinals, but it also received some good news Wednesday, when Tim Howard announced that he was ready to return to worldwide duties.
“That is the plan [to return soon]”. “It was a tough decision to make”. It has been a good break, but all it has done is really fuelled my fire. We spoke but obviously they are very busy with the Gold Cup at the moment.
The boys are doing well and it is a tournament that, in previous years, we have had some success in, Howard said.
“We will speak again after that tournament (the Gold Cup) finishes and I will make myself available for selection”.
Rejoice soccer fans, because although the immediate future is unclear, our record-setting World Cup hero has returned, and we can’t wait to see him back in the net again. His 15-save performance in the quarterfinals against Belgium last July was the most saves ever at a World Cup, according to Resources.FIFA.com.
The United States side have actually fared well in Howard’s absence.
