Tim Peake Assists Astronauts To Conduct Space Walk
Astronauts on board the International Space Station are getting into the holiday spirit.
Jannette Warrener, from the trust, told the BBC: “We gave apple seeds in September 2014 to the United Kingdom space agency in the hope they would go up in Tim Peake’s space mission”.
Alongside Malenchenko, a veteran of long-duration space flights who is on his fourth space mission, were NASA astronaut Tim Kopra and Peake, both former Apache military helicopter pilots.
“Life up here is absolutely spectacular”, he said via video-link to the journalists gathered on solid ground, showing his not-so ideal weightless-conquering skills with a not so flawless back-flip. Sometimes, it appears the brightest object in the dark sky.
“From the schoolchildren who watched the launch in class, people watching on the underground… your messages mean a great deal to me”, he blogged. While Peake is not the first Briton to visit the ISS, he is the first qualified astronaut to enter space on a British passport.
Major Peake’s mother Angela, 73, added: “We’ve got used to calling him “Flat Tim” so Flat Tim will be having dinner with us on Christmas Day”.
It’s in theaters now, and in space soon. We always talk about seeing the view of planet Earth and how lovely it is and you come to expect that.
According to the European Space Agency, Major Peake is the third European astronaut to live on the ISS this year. “That was a real surprise to me”.
He admitted he had “definitely not” perfected the move before dropping his microphone to give it a go.
Asked if he was still in love with science, Major Peake said: “Of course I am still in love with science”. He also revealed the space station had a distinctive smell, “kind of metallic, but not chemically or bad in any way”.
It’s awesome to think that even the astronauts in orbit will get a chance to participate in this massive cultural touchstone.
He has also received messages of support from the Queen and Sir Elton John.
NASA says it remains unclear exactly why the part became stuck, but it has spent the last few days putting in place a plan to fix it.
