Tim Ryan’s challenge to Pelosi faces vote today
U.S. Rep. Timothy J. Ryan, our Democratic congressman from Howland, is delivering the right message at the right time, and we support his aggressive and enthusiastic run for minority leader in the U.S. House of Representatives.
Pelosi has said she has the support of two thirds of the Democratic caucus.
“I think we have to take a deep breath and talk about the greatness of America”, she said.
Pelosi dismissed Ryan’s suggestion that she can’t lead the party with white working-class voters.
“The most important messenger in American politics is money, and the ability to get on the air, get on social media, get on media that are relevant to voters is really expensive, and she has done a phenomenal job at giving us that opportunity”, the former House Democrat said, The Hill reports. “We want change, ‘” Ryan said.
“The level of frustration in our caucus is as great as I have seen it”, Ryan told NBC’s “Meet the Press” on Sunday. The same thing happened during Democratic losses of control in 1946 and 1952, with Sam Rayburn sliding from Speaker to Minority Leader. “I wouldn’t be surprised if there were other Texas votes for Tim tomorrow”, O’Rourke said, echoing what other members of Congress familiar with the Ryan whip count told the Tribune. “That’s why we need new leadership”. Ryan and his supporters have hammered the changes, saying they would merely grant more authority to Pelosi – a charge she adamantly denies.
Moulton’s endorsement wasn’t surprising.
Reps. Seth Moulton of MA and Ruben Gallego of Arizona said voters sent a clear message in the 2016 election that they were sick of the status quo in Washington.
He has also vowed to reverse the perception that the Democrats have become a party of coastal elites with nearly no relevance to the American heartland, including to blue-collar workers who helped deliver the presidential contest to Mr Trump often in Midwestern states that had been expected to vote Democrat like MI and Wisconsin.
His staff has says he spent much of the Thanksgiving break making calls to his colleagues and that they believe it will be a close race.
Ten other Democrats had come out publicly in favor of Ryan as of Tuesday evening, including Reps.
Over 14 years in public office, “I have sat with women from OH and across the nation and heard them talk about their varying experiences: abusive relationships, financial hardship, health scares, rape and incest”, Ryan wrote in the op-ed. “But talking to a lot of members there is unease about the direction of the caucus”.
But Ryan says such changes do not go far enough.
“Last week, our Caucus rightly chose to take time to listen to our colleagues and constituents before rushing into leadership elections with no new plan or new strategy”, Moulton said in his statement Tuesday. Lawmakers who are retiring or lost their reelection bids don’t get a vote.
One Democratic member said that while they like and admire Pelosi, they thought the election results meant it was time for her to step aside: “I just don’t think you can look at the election and say we should keep doing what we’ve been doing”.
