Tim Sheens resigns as Kangaroos coach
The Kangaroos are on the search for a new coach with Tim Sheens officially resigning from the post to take up a full-time job with English Super League side Salford.
The former Canberra, Wests Tigers and North Queensland boss has agreed a three-year contract.
Sheens regained the World Cup from the Kiwis in 2013, and claimed two Four Nations titles.
The vastly-experienced Australian was still under contract as the Kangaroos’ head coach while he assisted Salford this year, initially in an advisory role and then as director of rugby till the end of the season.
Sheens won 26 out of his 31 Tests in charge.
“We certainly thank Tim for his service and wish him all the best for the future”.
“Now having had a good talk with the family and Marwan, he offered me a three-year deal”.
“So I’ve resigned from the Australian group and I’ll be ready to start in November”.
NRL Head of Football Todd Greenberg said Sheens had been a wonderful coach during his time with the Kangaroos, from 2009 until 2015.
The ARLC said it had not made any decision on a replacement for Sheens.
“Although I will be involved with the coaching, I won’t be the senior coach”.
“I have been greatly impressed by the desire and the commitment of these players to join the club and they are all very determined to develop their careers further as the club continues to build”, he told the club website. “The club is running well but, if you want to move ahead, you have to keep improving”.
The new faces at the AJ Bell Stadium are St Helens forward Mark Flanagan, Widnes prop Phil Joseph, Huddersfield prop Craig Kopczak and Warrington half-back Gareth O’Brien.
