Timbers 2 defeats EPL side Newcastle United 4
It would turn out to be the game winning goal as Newcastle’s Rolando Aarons got a pair of impressive goals in two minutes shortly thereafter as Newcastle really pushed for an equalizer before full time.
Newcastle will spend one more night in Portland after losing 4-3 to a Timbers XI before taking on Sheffield United on Sunday.
For Newcastle, Wijnaldum’s early goal was a short-lived bright spot, but that was assisted by Aarons in addition to that wonderful brace by Rolando later in the match.
For T2, this win is a huge confidence booster, with a win over a team from the best league on the planet amid their 2015 USL campaign.
Nick Besler scored in the 70th minute to up the lead for T2, but Aarons narrowed the gap with his two goals, coming in the 75th and 76th minutes.
Beasler made it 4-1 by heading home a Jeanderson cross on a play that started from the back and included with a nice move by Portland’s Rundell Winchester in midfield.
On the defence, he added: “In the first half it was a makeshift back four”. In the 30th Peay finished from close range after Rennico Clarke got a solid head to a Nanchoff corner kick. This time the ball kicked in by Taylor Peay. Going into the half up 3-1, T2 were comfortably on the front foot for most of the match.
Adbul Fatawu Safiu scored the equaliser for Portland after 13 minutes before Anthony Manning’s header gave the home side the lead.
Newcastle opened the scoring but T2 charged back to take the lead.
Fatawu evened the score seven minutes later, pouncing on a rebound after Belmar broke free and forced a one-on-one save from goalkeeper Karl Darlow.
As for Newcastle, fans will be hoping to see new signing Georginio Wijnaldum playing from the start. Magpies lead 1-0 over T2.

Vurnon Anita is confident that Newcastle United can bounce back from last season’s aberration.
“It was a no-pressure game for us”, said Nanchoff, who served as team captain on Tuesday. It also provided a nice lift for young Timbers players who are looking to establish themselves.
