TIME OUT: National Football League looking into clock error in Steelers-Chargers game
Bell’s run proved to be the final play of the game, but there should have been an extra 18 seconds on the clock due to an error by the official clock operator.
The comeback victory lifted the Steelers’ record to 3-2. Vick finished with 13-26 passing for 208 yards, one touchdown, and one interception.
Finally, Vick threw an absolute dime pass to Heath Miller placing them on the 1-yard line. A penalty stopped the clock with five seconds and then Bell won it in dramatic fashion.
Bell, despite facing eight man boxes for the majority of the game, rushed for 111 yards and over five yards per carry.
The National Football League will review the work done by the clock operator and game officials.
The 35-year-old Gates, suspended for violating the NFL’s policy on performance-enhancing drug use, caught career touchdown passes 100 and 101.
Despite his struggles throughout the game, he stepped up when it mattered, and proved that the Steelers could win games without their star quarterback, instilling hope in Pittsburgh faithful that this season may not be lost.
The Chargers came back on their next series to go ahead.
San Diego called a timeout before Pittsburgh ran the gutsy play. It’s worth nothing there was a large number of Steelers fans in Qualcomm Stadium Monday.
The Chargers forged back into a 17-10 lead. It was only the third interception of the season for the Steelers, but their second forced turnover of the game after recovering a fumble earlier. Blake made an aggressive move on the ball and took off down the right side.
There might have been more timely wins, a 38-31 win at Lambeau Field in 2013 stands out, but this might have been Tomlin’s best coaching job on the road.
He discussed his thought process on Le’Veon Bell’s game-winning touchdown during his usual Tuesday afternoon press conference. Martavis Bryant will finally return to the field in Week 6 after serving his four-game suspension and not suiting up for the fifth. “It’s a good change, I think it’s a change of pace, there’s a few different options…I’m not exactly sure how many times we ran it yesterday, but obviously we ran it at a very key time in a key moment that we felt we had to have it”.
Late in the third quarter, and just when it seemed like the Chargers were on their way to another scoring drive, the Steelers defense rose up.
The Steelers trailed San Diego 7-0 after the first quarter.
But they didn’t have their Super Bowl quarterback, Ben Roethlisberger.
Rivers didn’t waste any time going to Gates on San Diego’s first possession, completing passes of 10 and 12 yards to the tight end. Both the Steelers and the Chargers should be upset that this happened.
With Vick at the helm, Brown’s numbers have become average. And so as the Steelers lined up in the Wildcat formation with Mike Vick split out wide and Bell seven yards deep in the end zone, the injured star put in the hands of the Steelers’ best player.
