Tinder heralds inclusivity with 37 new gender options
Now, instead of choosing between “man” or “woman”, a user can search for and add any term that reflects their gender identity. Tinder’s update allows trans users to be themselves on the platform, and makes it clear that Tinder is committed to inclusion.
In addition to this change, Tinder says it’s provided staff with more resources and support, including education, in order to “be a better ally to transgender and gender non-conforming communities”.
Tinder has introduced an update to increase the number of genders on its app under its #AllTypesAllSwipe campaign. The update doesn’t stop you from being matched with users who don’t want queer or transgender partners, which CEO Sean Rad said was how transgender users were being attacked in the first place.
And Brill says in the long run the app being more inclusive to the transgender community is important because it will allow users to be more honest to who they really are when seeking a partner.
Transgender people have previously reported facing abuse on the app and being reported to Tinder administrators for being trans.
Trans Montrealer Tranna Wintour is applauding Tinder for expanding its gender options in response to complaints. As a result, many trans people were banned and kicked off the app. “What we discovered was that many of our trans community were getting reported – not because they were doing anything wrong – but because they were transgender”.
“We helped make sure the app had language that would send the message to trans people that Tinder was listening and would develop an app to meet their needs”, Adams said. “Our team will review your request and work to grant you access to Tinder”.
“It’s not only good for the Tinder community, but it’s the right thing to do for the world”.
“I know this update will helps trans and gender non-conforming users feel more comfortable while forging new relationships”.
Currently, the new feature is available only for users in Canada, the United Kingdom and the United States.
