Tinder moves beyond dating, with Tinder Social feature

Tinder added a new feature to their app today called Tinder social, which will allow groups of people to get together.

Tinder is surely one of the most popular dating apps out there, as many people take to the app in order to meet and date new people. And it’s now venturing into the same territory as Cliq, a Chicago startup that launched a year ago with a similar mission. Users who would prefer not to be added to groups can opt out of Tinder Social through their settings and will not appear on their friends’ lists. If Chelsea’s group (see below) contains Micheal, who also has a group going out, the two can merge should any group members from both swipe right.

With Tinder Social, users can see who’s going out tonight, what they’re up to, and plan their night accordingly.

Tinder is facing more pressure to popularize its premium dating service, Plus, since parent company Match Group went public, late previous year.

Gone are the days of Tinder being akin to a modern-day glorified “hot or not” website: it just got a lot more social.

If you are alone and friendless, say a tourist visiting a new city, you can not now be matched with a group. “It hasn’t happened much in the past, so there is little reason to believe it will happen in the future”.

With the release of Tinder Social, the IAC-owned company is looking to replicate the same behavior that seems to create genuine relationships in the real world – meeting people through mutual friends. Any of you guys big Tinder users like the idea of this? “It’s confirming there’s a need for it”.

Under pressure to expand its usership, Tinder has recently been testing a number of new features. Previously the app lets the chat up for days, but Tinder’s CEO Sean Rad explained that the users in the beta trials focused on hanging out that same day and making plans for that night.

Tinder, which has millions of singles users, is now the inspiration for a movie.

“We’ve done a really good job facilitating romantic one-on-one connections but we want to power your entire social life”, said Rad.
