Titanfall Games Announced for Smartphones, “Next Year Will Be Very Big”
Mixing high-energy parkour-style movement with heavy firepower and explosive mech-on-mech battles, Titanfall drew rave reviews for its playability even as critics panned its minimal focus on story. Nexon also pioneered the concept of micro-transactions and the free-to-play business model, setting a new standard in which play is free, and users have the option to purchase in-game items to enhance their experience.
Ltd. (“Nexon”) (3659.TO), a worldwide leader in free-to-play online and mobile games, and independentvideogame developer Respawn Entertainment announced today that the companies have partnered to create several new and original smartphone and tablet games based on the expansive sci-fi universe of Titanfall.
According to Vince Zampella who co-founded Respawn, “It’s about being able to extend our universe into an area that we at Respawn aren’t expert in”. The free-to-play publisher has inked a deal with developer Respawn Entertainment for what it calls a “multi-game, multi-year” partnership. We’re not sure what exactly that would entail, but these titles are only expected to be released in 2016. Zampella says (via Game Informer) they will be “original game experiences” and not first-person shooters like the original. Next year is going to be a very big year for Titanfall. “They see the opportunity to take one of our favorite games of all time and bring it to a new platform”. When we built this universe, we realized how extensible it was … and we want to get it out in front of as many people as possible. We’re… making decisions based on what’s best for the game and for the brand. Particle City, co-located with Respawn in Los Angeles, is now hiring top talent. While the mobile games will strike out in a different direction, gameplay-wise, Zampella sees a similar audience. Zampella outlined more of what the two companies hope to accomplish.
