Titans keep interim Mike Mularkey as head coach
The final head coaching vacancy in the National Football League has been filled as the Tennessee Titans have reportedly hired Mike Mularkey to help make their franchise relevant again. Per several reports he was the favorite to receive the job after filling in as the interim coach.
Mularkey didn’t have much more success than Whisenhunt as the Titans went 2-7 in the nine games he was serving as the Titans head coach.
They are looking for their third coach since Jeff Fisher left in January 2011.
Though Mularkey was coaching the team through the hard season, it’s fair to note that he only took that role in November, so all of the struggles can’t be blamed on him. He is 18-39 – just 4-21 over his last 25 games -with the Jaguars and Titans.
Former Eagles coach Chip Kelly, who was hired by the 49ers on Thursday, was presumed Tennessee’s top choice: He would have been reunited with former OR quarterback Marcus Mariota.
“We won’t be starting from scratch”, Mularkey said. “We understand this may take time as we rebuild the roster and bring in new coaches for Mike’s staff, but we believe he has the experience and expertise to build a consistent victor”. “There is plenty of work to be done until we reach our goal, but we will all work tirelessly to get us there”.
The Titans previously announced they would not renew the contract of general manager Ruston Webster, the team’s GM since 2012.
Before being promoted to interim head coach, Mularkey was the team’s assistant head coach and tight ends coach.
He has eight years of offensive coordinating under his belt as well, including stints at Atlanta, Miami, Pittsburgh and Tampa Bay.
Whisenhunt went 1-6 on the year.
