To-Play Halo Online Shuts Down
There were a few that things that this could mean that they are working to release the Full Halo game on PC but we think that is highly unlikely right now.
Saber Interactive’s Halo Online, a free to play spin-off of the popular shooter franchise, has been officially cancelled by Microsoft.
The game was released as an experiment and was only ever launched in Russian Federation in an alpha test phase. There was a catch though, the game was free to play and strictly limited to Russian Federation. If you somehow put money into the game, you can ask for a refund through August 30 (cutting it kinda close there!).
Maybe that’s exactly why Microsoft chose to cancel Halo Online, though.
Halo Online servers were in fact taken offline last December, but players believed it would return once again after Saber Interactive, co-developers of the project, were ready to get it live again. Were Halo Online to be released, it would potentially rob the traditional Halo games of sales on the platform.
Fogeyman says that as a result of these delays, “the current form of Halo Online will not be released”.
We may never know why Halo Online was cancelled, but if PC ports of Halo 5: Guardians or Halo: The Master Chief Collection are announced within the next year or so, it wouldn’t be all that surprising.
This entire experience doesn’t appear to be a waste of time as a Microsoft spokesperson tells Shacknews the company was able to learn from it.
