Toews, Blackhawks beat slumping Ducks 1-0 in overtime
The Chicago Blackhawks’ Marian Hossa shoots and scores past the Anaheim Ducks’ Cam Fowler in the first period on Friday, January 17, 2014, at the United Center in Chicago.
Now it’s up to the Chicago Blackhawks to keep the Ducks down and not let them get back on their collective feet tonight. They also beat Tampa Bay 1-0 in overtime on Saturday night on Toews’ first goal of the season.
According to Elias, the Blackhawks are the third team in the past 61 years – and the second in the past two seasons – to have back-to-back 1-0 wins with the same goaltender earning the shutout and same player scoring the lone goal in each game.
It appeared late in the third period that Artemi Panarin broke the deadlock with his third of the season, but Ducks netminder Frederik Andersen had a hand in denying the goal. Patrick Kane and Brent Seabrook were credited with the assists Monday.
Both representing the Western Conference, the Ducks are only 1-5-1 to start the season and have only three points so far. Andersen has a. 938 save percentage and is allowing just 1.86 goals per game, but his team in front of him has been brutal. The Ducks have gotten no production out of their top line and for a team that had Stanley Cup or bust type of expectations coming in they are quickly putting Bruce Boudreau on the hot seat as their season slowly unwinds.
“They’re big, they’re strong, they’re good at kind of being heavy on the puck down low and wearing you down”, Toews said.
In its first seven games, the Ducks had been shutout four times.
They had an opportunity to score early in the second period against Chicago but Corey Perry shot one off the inside of the left post.
Chicago had similar problems generating offensive chances. Ducks F Andrew Cogliano played in his 630th consecutive game, matching Andy Hebenton (1955-64) for the second-longest streak to begin an National Hockey League career. Clayton Stoner got a 10 minute misconduct penalty after fighting Ryan Garbutt, who bumped into Andersen.
The Ducks look to snap their ugly losing skid as they head into Dallas to meet up with a Stars team looking for their seventh win in nine tries.
