Toledo News Now: Bubba Watson to remove Confederate flag from ‘General Lee
“Bubba Watson is one of the most beloved pro golfers in America, possibly for his good ol” boy charm just as much as his incredibly long drives.
A couple months ago, Watson returned to the same auction he originally purchased the auto and got it signed by an extremely important figure in the show’s history: John Schneider, who played Bo Duke from 1979 through 1985.
The National Park Service confirmed Confederate flags were taken down at Fort Sumter, the place where the first shots of the Civil War were fired, and Confederate flag items were removed from the gift shop.
The Confederate flag has been thrust into the spotlight as of late, following the horrific and racially-motivated mass-shooting that occurred in Charleston South Carolina.
The network has pulled episodes of “The Dukes of Hazzard” from its schedule, a spokesperson for TV Land confirmed on Wednesday.
Since the Charleston shooting, retailers including Wal-Mart and Amazon have agreed to stop selling merchandise emblazoned with the symbol.
Schneider said that TV Land was acting “reactionary and overly PC”, saying, “Can’t we all just watch TV?”
The 2005 Warner-Bros.-produced “Dukes of Hazzard” movie, which starred Seann William Scott and South Knoxville’s own Johnny Knoxville as cousins Bo and Luke Duke, also featured a Confederate-flag-emblazoned General Lee.
Owners of 30 tracks that host NASCAR auto-racing events issued a joint statement on Thursday asking fans not to display the flag at their facilities.
Watson, a two-time Masters champion, won the Travelers Championship on Sunday and is competing this week at the Greenbrier Classic in West Virginia. I bought it because who doesn’t want a vehicle that jumped? “All my friends, nobody is offended by it, but now with all of the controversy going on, I felt like it was the right thing to do”.
