Toledo’s Matt Campbell named Iowa State coach
On Sunday, Campbell celebrated his 36th birthday as the new coach of the Cyclones.
Toledo head coach Matt Campbell has agreed to become the replacement for Paul Rhoads, who coached the Cyclones for the past seven seasons and went 32-55 overall. Campbell was considered a possible candidate at Missouri.
“We were going to go out there and compete for the seniors anyway”, said Iowa State quarterback Joel Lanning.
Campbell is thought to have interviewed with ISU on Saturday, following his current team’s 35-30 loss to Western Michigan on Friday. On Saturday, Toledo offered Campbell a contract that would have made him the highest-paid coach in the Mid-American Conference.
Joe Hubener threw for 133 yards while running for two touchdowns, Winston Dimel also ran for two scores, and Kansas State (5-6, 2-7 Big 12) moved within a victory over West Virginia in its home finale next weekend of becoming bowl eligible for the sixth straight season. Iowa State went 8-28 in its last three seasons under Rhoads, a popular and energetic coach who took the Cyclones to three bowls in his first four seasons. He took over Toledo in 2011 just days after being named the interim coach, and has not produced a losing season in his time with the Rockets. “A big part of being the athletics director is dealing with personnel, and clearly you wouldn’t choose after a heart attack to do a basketball coaching search and then a football search, but you don’t get to choose timing in life”. Per CoachingSearch.com, Campbell signed a six-year deal and will make $2 million during his first season.
“We think very highly of Matt Campbell and have made him a very generous offer to keep him as our head football coach”, O’Brien said. Campbell is 35-15 in four seasons with Toledo.
Mike Warren, the nation’s top freshman rusher, led Iowa State with 74 yards, but he didn’t get a carry over the final five series.
He’s a good guy with a solid background in the game as a player and coach, who was popular among players and fans at UT.
“Glad that’s over”, WVU head coach Dana Holgorsen said after the game, when it finally was.
ATLANTA – Mark Richt stepped down as Georgia’s coach on Sunday in what was called a “mutual” decision but looked like a firing.
That day officially begins today with an introductory news conference.
“It was a dreary day in Morgantown to finish up a tremendous seven-year run”, Rhoads said.
