Toledo Shuts Down Temple In Boca Raton Bowl
This is only the second Boca Raton Bowl to be played at Florida Atlantic’s football stadium. Don’t look for Toledo to change that Tuesday night. While Temple players originally thought they had the ball, the refs ruled differently.
“I’d like to finish in the Top 25”.
Temple will be featuring in a bowl game for fifth time in seven seasons, but will be playing in its first bowl game since 2011 when it won the Gildan New Mexico Bowl with a 37-15 victory over Wyoming.
Ely was named the game’s offensive MVP. I see Treon Harris struggling, and Jake Rudock getting enough out of his running game and making a few plays through the air to lead the Wolverines to the win, 21-10. “Unfortunately we didn’t win either, but we’ll be back, and we’ll avail ourselves better next time”.
The Rockets refused to let that streak spill into the fourth quarter.
Senior passer Phillip Ely had a productive season completing 06-of-375 passes and amassing 2,680 yards and 21 touchdowns after he injured his knee ending his 2014 season.
“We just couldn’t do a thing on second down”, Rhule said. “It was an unbelievable play”. The first one played previous year had Marshall blowing out Northern Illinois by a score of 52 to 23, but the big victor of this game is the local economy as fans of the competing teams make their way to our area to watch. Kareem Hunt rushed for two scores, including one with 2:29 remaining following a controversial onside kick recovery by the Rockets that sealed the game.
Toledo (10-2) led 25-9 late in the fourth quarter before Temple found the end zone for the first time.
Malone, who still will coach tight ends, has a “winning pedigree”, coach Darrell Hazell said in a release, adding that he looks “forward to sitting down with him once we get back from the holiday break and putting our offense together”. “It was really on us, everywhere”. Following a laser throw from Ely to Cody Thompson for an 80 yard touchdown, Temple was knocking on the redzone but Walker threw an interception to kill all the momentum they had built on the drive. What Else? – Despite the wet conditions, Ely was sharp, connecting on 20-of-28 passes for 285 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions.
The defense held the Owls to just 99 yards on the ground and held Temple without a touchdown until 2:50 left in the game.
“To have this energy pumped into this area just kind of brings everybody alive”, said Mary Lou Berger, Palm Beach County Mayor and county commissioner. This is going to be a fun game and one of the best of the bowl season, at least on paper. “It falls on me, you know”. The kick, which gave Jones the single-season record for most field goals made with 22, was set up by a 40-yard pitch-and-catch from Walker to redshirt-freshman wide receiver Ventell Bryant.
Both Temple and Toledo were dominant in the third quarter during the regular season, but Temple shined more in this game. We opened it up at the end, moved the ball some, but they played good defense.
Ely and Woodley were chosen the game’s most valuable players. It was only the second bowl game in Akron history, with the first was the 2005 Motor City Bowl, a 38-31 loss to Memphis. Terry Swanson can handle the work if not, and Damion Jones-Moore can run it, too.
