Toll rises in China landslide to 16
Nine people were killed and 28 others were missing when a landslide hit a village in east China’s Zhejiang Province, officials said today.
Torrents of earth and rocks buried nearly 20 homes in the area at around 10.50 p.m. Friday (1450 GMT) in Zhejiang Province in the country’s east.
Local officials say the landslide struck a village near the city of Lishui late on Friday night.
About 8,200 people were resettled after their homes were destroyed in the flooding, according to Xinhua, with more than 87,000 people affected by the waters, which caused blackouts and road closures. In total, about 300 people were also evacuated from the site.
Floods are likely to continue, with heavy rains expected through Wednesday, Xinhua said.
Going by pictures circulating online, rescue teams were using boats to travel through the flooded villages and aiding trapped villagers to climb out of their windows.
